Starfish are among the most familiar of marine animals and possess a wide diversity of body forms. There are about 1,800 known living species of sea star, and they occur in all of the Earth's oceans. Most starfish typically have five rays or arms, which radiate from a central disk. On the end of each arm or ray there is a microscopic eye (ocellus), which allows the sea star to see.
